Text: In November 1998, an expert panel appointed by the Canadian VMA (CVMA) at the request of Health Canada, but working independently, found “a number of legitimate animal welfare concerns associated with the use of rBST” (recombinant bovine somatotropin). These included an increased risk of clinical mastitis and lameness, and a reduction in the lifespan of treated cows. The panel presented meta-analyses with brief discussion about epidemiologic factors.
