Abstract:
This study aimed to analyze the debate over genetically modified foods in Senate and House of Representatives. Therefore, as an object of study, we used the speeches of Senators and Representatives from January 2003 to December 2008, available on the websites of the Senate and House of Representatives. Such speeches were methodologically worked for Content Analysis technique, form thematic analysis, which seeks the cores senses of texts. As main results, issues like the lack of scientific basis for decision-making, prerogatives of CTNBio, the economic interests in the adoption of transgenic products and the joint debate on stem cells and GM in the same law, were recurring themes in the discourses. We conclude that this issue generates, among parliamentarians, controversy similar to that identified in the general population, including the scientific community, which contributes to the persistence of a high degree of uncertainty about the use of GMOs.
