Abstract: As is evident from the review of publications, on the basis of which a conclusion about the ecological safety of transgenic plants was drawn, the methods and test objects used were not adequate to meet the aims set. The widespread use of transgenic Bt-plants can have a negative effect on the environment. First, these plants produce 1500-2000 times more of endotoxin than at the single application of Bt-toxin chemicals. Second, the cultivation of Bt-plants leads to the accumulation of Bt-toxin in the soil. Third, the decay of transgenic plants is much slower than that of genetically nonmodified strains, and the biological activity of the soil under transgenic plants is appreciably lower than in the control plots.
