Abstract: The herbicide Roundup applied to Roundup Ready soybean consistently affects root-associated Fusarium. Populations increased 2-5 times 5 d after Roundup application and continued increasing for >2 wk. Soybean receiving no herbicide or conventional tank-mix had no noticeable increase in fungal populations. Specific effects of increased Fusarium are unknown; however, such imbalances in soil communities may impact microbially-mediated processes. The rush to provide Roundup Ready technology to farmers may have overlooked evaluation for soil ecological impacts. Objectives of this review are to provide information based on recent research conducted to better understand impacts on soil biological processes and propose tactics for remediating potential adverse effects. Microbial respiration and enzymatic activity in soybean rhizospheres were affected by Roundup; glyphosate (active ingredient) was detected in root exudates and stimulated growth of certain rhizosphere microorganisms. Potential adverse impacts of enhanced fungal colonization of soybean roots may be offset with certain foliar amendments to remediate effects of detrimental organisms.
