Abstract: The effects of genetically modified soybean feeding were evaluated in rabbits. Several enzymes were assayed in serum and tissue homogenates (hearth, skeletal muscle, liver, kidney) in order to reveal possible organ-specific alterations. Within the enzymes tested,
lactic dehydrogenase showed significant differences in hearth and kidney. The electrophoretic analysis of LDH isoenzymes showed that LDH1 was increased in rabbit fed with GM soybean and such increase was detected also in liver. Our results showed that, despite no clinical and/or serum biochemical alteration can be detected in rabbits fed with GM soybean, a modification of LDH activity was seen, thus suggesting that the potential metabolic effects of GM feeding merits further studies.
